Pet Dog Health – How To Keep Your Dog From Jumping Up On People

without comments

An alternative to having your dog jump up on you and other people is to teach it to sit and lift it’s paw when greeting you for a handshake or similar tricks where the dog will be rewarded with attention.

Dog Quote: They have dog food for constipated dogs.
If your dog is constipated, why screw up a good thing?
Stay indoors and let ‘em bloat!
….David Letterman

No matter how much we might enjoy our pet jumping up to greet us, there are many people who dislike having a strange dog coming up and jumping on them. For many people it can be a frightening experience as not everyone is a dog lover.

Besides that, many people just don’t want dirty paw marks over their clothing.

It can also create major problems if a large dog were to jump up on a child or an elderly person.

More Information:
Dog Training

Dogs will generally jump up on people because they are overly excited and pleased to see them – even if that person is a stranger.

Many people inadvertently encourage this behavior by rewarding the dog with attention after the dog has jumped up on them. The dog then seeks similar reward from other people whether they like it or not.

This is detrimental to the proper training of the dog and all members of the family must realize that they’re doing more harm than good by encouraging their dog to jump up on people.

Consistency is important in all forms of dog training, where members of the dog’s family will need to exercise discipline and accept that training will be all the more difficult if the dog is allowed to continue with this behavior.

Failure to do so will lead to confusion with the pet not knowing what is right or wrong.

Dogs are sometimes considered a member of the family especially when the animal is brought to vacations and other activities. The best way to ensure the pet is strong is by implementing some measures to reduce the chances of getting sick.

You can get all the information and guidance from the veterinarian including choosing the right dog for the family.

You might find the right dog at the pet shop. Some of the people in the neighborhood may also be selling or giving the pups away. In some cases, a stray will follow the individual home and this is the beginning of the relationship.

There are a few things that you must pay attention to before getting a dog. If there are papers, the family line will be a strong indicator that this pet will not fall easily to disease. If this is a stray, this will also do as long as the tail wags and the eyes are bright.

The dog should be brought to the vet immediately for closer examination. The veterinarian will run some tests to make sure there are no parasites or viruses present and perhaps even administer a booster shot if necessary.

Booster shots especially for puppies usually happen over a period three months. During this time, the animal must be kept away from other dogs and other places. The best way will be to keep the dog on a leash to prevent the animal from running around or digging in the yard and eating something that could be harmful.

You must provide a nice warm shelter such as bedding if the dog will stay inside the house and a kennel when the pet is left outdoors. Your dog should also be given proper exercise by walking it in the morning and in the evening.

There are many food products around. You can ask your veterinarian which is the best food that gives the right amount of nutrients. Proper nutrition may include giving the pet some multivitamins as long as these are recommended by the veterinarian.

Discover The Truth About Commercial Dog Food

You should just be careful not to feed the animal too much since obesity can also lead to other problems for the dog.

Aside from checking for any visible signs of problem with the dog, you can do better by bringing the pet in for the regular examinations with the vet. Shots and other cleaning can be done once a year or every three years depending on the strength of the drug.

The dog should also be given a bath once a week or as recommended by your vet. There are shampoos and soaps that are available in the supermarket, the clinic or at the pet shop. You can try some brands and just replace it if the product isn’t that good as the others.

There are a lot of dogs that are not given proper care in the United States. You can have the pet spayed or neutered to control the animal population. These services are available at the clinic or in the animal shelter near the home.

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. The best way to make sure this pet will live for many years will be to provide some preventive health care. You can read up or learn some things from the vet which will surely be useful.

Dog Health Issue – Stop Puppies Biting

without comments

The sooner the puppy is taught not to bite by the owner or by interaction with other dogs, the less aggressive they will become as they grow older and the more pleasant they will be to live with. Taking a puppy to a dog training school will allow it to interact with other dogs where it will quickly be corrected for any misbehavior.

Dog Quote: To his dog, every man is Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs.
….Aldous Huxley

Puppies love to bite.
The do it naturally but it is something that they must be taught not to do. This needs to be addressed while they are young because dog bites can lead to all sorts of problems including legal action.
It may seem fun and funny to have a puppy biting but a full-grown dog can do a lot of damage, particularly to children if they are in the habit of biting. Dogs have immense strength in their jaws and even a playful nip can do permanent damage to a child.

Generally, puppies are taught to control their biting from their mothers but in most cases we get puppies as pets that have been taken from their mothers at a very young age and it is up to us to teach them as puppies not to bite.

By letting your dog socialize with other dogs from a young age they will quickly learn from their elders, provided they have been taught well, that the desire to bite needs to be curbed to avoid retaliation and an ensuing fight.

Taking a puppy to a dog training school will allow it to interact with other dogs where it will quickly be corrected for any misbehavior.
Puppies should generally learn to interact with other dogs within the first three months of their life.
The longer this is left the more difficult it becomes for your dog to socialize correctly and they can become dangerous later in life.
As with children, the sooner your puppy can learn correct behavior patterns the better they will be in the long term.

It is also wise to get the puppy to behave correctly in the presence of other animals including cats and any other pets that they might come in contact with over their life.

There are many items that are available from the pet stores and vets that can give your puppy suitable satisfaction to chew and bite upon.
This will allow your puppy to learn what is right and what is not right to bite.

Pet Dog Health – Remember, You Are The Leader of the Pack

without comments

Remember, You Are The Leader of the Pack
One of the first and most important steps in dog training is to get the respect and confidence of your dog. As mentioned in previous newsletters dogs are pack animals, and there always must be a leader of the pack. You need to ensure that your dog understands that you are his or her leader.

Dog Quote: They never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation.
….Jerome K. Jerome

One of the first and most important steps in dog training is to get the respect and confidence of your dog. As mentioned in previous newsletters dogs are pack animals, and there always must be a leader of the pack. You need to ensure that your dog understands that you are his or her leader.

Once you’ve done that you will have gained the respect and confidence of your dog. Having done this will make dog training a whole lot easier for you and a far more pleasurable experience.

More Information:
Dog Training

Failure to gain the respect of your dog will result in a disobedient animal, as they will not look to you as the lead dog, and it is only the lead dog that they will look to for direction.

While most new puppy owners love to give their animal love and affection, they also need to be aware that leadership and respect are equally important. In fact, I would go as far as to say that leadership and respect are more important, because it is only when you get that from your dog that you can truly enjoy the benefits of having a dog in the family.

And the sooner you get your respect and leadership the more enjoyable life will be for both you and your dog, and the sooner and easier it will be to have your dog fully trained.

The longer you leave the process of training your dog the more difficult it will become, as habits of old dogs are harder to break.
