Wellness Dog Food - Homemade Food May Be The Best For Your Diabetic Dog

Diabetes is nothing new to me, my grandfather, father, and all my uncles have diabetes, but I was very surprised when I seen an ad about owning a diabetic dog. This ad was about an elderly lady who was asking for donations to help buy insulin for her dog.

After reading this ad I took it upon myself to see what I could learn about dogs with diabetes and other health issues. I am sad to say that I did not learn much from my hours of research. Mainly all I could find was miracle cures and recipes. However, I did come across a very interesting find; Dogs and cats are not born with diabetes, unless their parent where diabetic at the time of birth. So this leaves me to wonder what we as caregivers are doing do wrong to make our pets un-healthy. For the most part I believe it is our pets diet and what is more convenient for us. Why bother feeding our pets a homemade, low carb diet, when we can just give them a shot, and keep feeding them commercial, pre- made foods. I know dogs have a different digestive system then humans, but how much about us is the same. If any animal can develop cancer, allergies, and other human related diseases, why should we treat them any different? I have two brief stories I would like to share with you, that explains how beneficial a good diet can be.

I had the pleasure of working in a Rest Home for over 2 years. In a typical Rest Home, the residents are able to check their selves in or out at anytime. Over half of our residents where diabetic, and moved into our facility to help control there diabetes. We also had several extreme cases that where ordered there by doctors. Our main goal was to prepare balanced, low car diets, to help our members become insulin free. And the best part about the whole experience was, it worked. One of your residents was able to down grade to pills in about a year. The best part of her story was the fact that before her diet change she was at 3 insulin shots a day! She was not the only person to see great benefits from a diet change. With time and help most of our residents we able to become insulin free.

The next story is about, what are the long term effects of insulin? When my father started taken shots his blood pressure went through the roof and he had to take a different medication to help save his kidneys. In order to treat one problem he gained several more. There is no reason to believe that our pets will not suffer from the same health issues, if not more.

So before you take the quick way out, stop and talk with your vet about a better diet for your diabetic dog. Not only will your dog be healthier, but you could be saving your self and your pet from a life of medicines and doctor visits.
